ANJIN STORY
Anjin... William Adams.
Navigator. Diplomat.
Samurai.
Anjin is inspired by the story of William Adams, also known as Miura Anjin in Japan. In 1600, he became the first Englishman to arrive in Japan and later became one of the most influential foreigners in the country during the early 17th century. His story illustrates how professional excellence, character and trusted advisers can help organisations and individuals navigate seemingly insurmountable threats to achieve their ambitious goals.

Adams developed expertise in navigation while serving in the Royal Navy and later became a pilot, guiding a Dutch merchant fleet to Japan in search of new trade opportunities. Despite encountering significant adversity and largely due to Adams' exceptional skills and character the fleet arrived in Japan. Recognizing Adams's expertise and abilities, Tokugawa Ieyasu, a prominent Japanese leader, sought his advice during a period of impending civil war. Adams played a crucial role in securing Tokugawa's control over Japan, his rise to Shogun and Japan’s subsequent stability and prosperity.

In recognition of his contributions, Adams was awarded the esteemed status of samurai and became a trusted senior advisor to the Shogun on matters of foreign affairs and trade. He died in Japan in 1620. His remarkable journey from an English navigator to a trusted advisor and samurai had a significant impact on Japanese and British history.
